Distribución y habitat

This species can be found on the summits of mountainous ridges of the Coastal Range and on mid-elevation slopes of the Andes, between La Ligua-Alicahue (Valparaíso Region) and Cachapoal (Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins Region) river basins. The species occurs within an altitudinal range of 1400–2200 m a.s.l., where it is restricted to rocky outcrops embedded within the following vegetation belts: The Andean Mediterranean sclerophyllous forest is of Kageneckia angustifolia, Guindilia trinervis and the Andean Mediterranean low shrubland is of Chuquiraga oppositifolia and Nardophyllum lanatum and Coastal Mediterranean deciduous forest of Nothofagus macrocarpa and Ribes punctatum (Cádiz-Véliz et al., 2026)

Hábito

Perennial herb, 20-45 cm tall. Flowering from October to December and fruiting from December to January.

Características claves para su identificación

Valeriana umbellifera is similar to V. hornschuchiana, but differs in having a stem with short internodes, which in olderplants is covered by bases of old petioles (vs. stem with elongate internodes and sparse leaf scars), a capituliform, terminal and contracted inflorescence resembling an umbel (vs. a paniculiform, terminal and axillary inflorescence with elongated internodes), and a distribution restricted to rock crevices (vs. mainly on rocky soil and scree) (Cádiz-Véliz, 2026).
