Semidesert, Mediterranean, Coastal matorral and Mountain matorral & sclerophyllous forest

Distribution and habitat

This variety has an extensive distribution throughout Chile (mostly in coastal regions), from Choapa Province (Region Coquimbo) to Volcán Villarica (Region Araucanía). It grows on sandy substrates in rocky places in open sclerophyllous forests, from 15-1800 m above sea level, (Marticorena, 2006).

Habit

Perennial up to 36 cm tall. Fruiting September to February.

Key characteristics

There are two varieties of Acaena trifida endemic to Chile. This variety is more-or-less hairy throughout and the cupules containing the fruit have silky hairs while in var. glabrescens all parts are without any kind of hairs.

Notes

Seed of this species is banked by the national seed bank of Chile, INIA.
