Distribution and habitat

Schizanthus laetus has been found in northern Chile from Caleta Blanco Encalada (Region of Antofagasta, 24°27'S) to Cachinal de la Costa (Region of Atacama 26°04'S). It can be found in the bottoms of ravines and on rocky slopes, in a coastal belt of approximately 190 km a elevations between 10–800m. It grows in sandy or organic soils. All examined specimens have been collected during years with unusual precipitation events in the area (Lavandero et al. 2021)

Habit

Annual herb, 15–50 cm tall. Flowering and fruiting between August and December.

Key characteristics

Similar to S. fallax but differs by having the lower lip always more than half the size of upper lip (vs. having a strongly reduced lower lip, always less than half the size of the upper lip), the upper lateral lobes conspicuously divided (vs. weakly divided into two equal lobules).
