Distribution and habitat

Occurs in Andes and valleys of the Regions of Atacama (Province of Chañaral, 26°20' lat. S) to Coquimbo (Province of Elqui, 30°10' lat. S) from 800–2800 m above sea level. It frequents rocky areas on hillsides and screes. It prefers well-drained soils, like coarse sand and is less abundant when growing in clay soils. Associated species include Heliotropium sinuatum, Encelia canescens and Spinoliva ilicifolia (Morales-Fierro et al., 2020).

Habit

Herb 60-80 cm tall

Key characteristics

Distinguishing characters include a reduced inferior lip, compared to the upper lip and white flowers with a very long corolla tube which is two or three times longer than the calyx. The basal leaves have entire or dentate and undulate margins (Morales-Fierro et al., 2020).

Notes

Seed of this species is banked by the national seed bank of Chile, INIA.
