Coquimbo and Valparaíso

Distribution and habitat

Occurs along the coast between the Regions of Coquimbo (Province of Elqui, 29°25' lat. S) and Valparaíso (Province of Petorca, 32°20' lat. S). 20–350 m above sea level. It grows on dunes and in sandy slopes and recently disturbed roadside verges, often under the shade of shrubs and is associated with Centaurea chilensis, Myrcianthes coquimbensis and Heliotropium stenophyllum (Morales-Fierro et al., 2020).

Habit

Annual herb up to 70 cm tall.

Key characteristics

Similar to S. carlomunozii var. carlomunozii in the size and corolla form but differing in possessing three large, dark spots covering the distal portion of the upper lip. The colour of these spots fade from the bottom to the top (Morales-Fierro et al., 2020).
