Distribution and habitat

It occurs on low hills in the Cordillera de los Andes, Intermediate Depression and the Cordillera de la Costa, between 60-1200 above sea-level. It grows among thickets; In black sand of volcanic origin in the Central Valley (eg. Itata River, Chillán) and in reddish sands of the Cordillera de la Costa. Flowering occurs between November and February.

Key characteristics

This species is closely related to Chaentanthera multicaulis (The distribution of which is further north), both species have cilia on the margin of leaves and bracts, and share the same composition of trichomes on the surface of the leaf. However, C. ciliata is larger and more robust in all aspects, from the size of the leaf to the trichomes of the achenes (Davies 2010)
