Distribution and habitat
Found from Region Atacama to Metropolitana, at elevations of 100 to 3000 meters above sea-level. It grows amongst desert scrub and sclerophyllous vegetation often on rocky north-facing slopes in the Coastal Cordillera and the Andes.

Habit
Forms large and very spiny barrel-like bodies which become columnar when mature and can reach over 90 cm high.
Notes
Seed of this species is banked by the national seed bank of Chile, INIA.
