Distribution and habitat

Oxalis gigantea occurs in coastal valleys from Quebrada El Médano (Region Antofagasta) to Cordón Panulcillo near Huasco (Region Atacama) where it is locally abundant. It has one site inland in semi desert at Cuesta de las Cardas near La Serena (Region Coquimbo). It is mainly found on alluvial fans and stony slopes in the coastal fog desert.

Habit

Perennial, pachycaulous shrub up to 2.5 m tall.

Notes

Seed of this species is banked by the national seed bank of Chile, INIA.
